Cryoablation therapy for atrial fibrillation 

Treatment of atrial fibrillation by means of a freezing method: In this process, sclerotization (elimination) is achieved through the application of cold. 

With cryoablation, the tissue which is responsible for the occurrence of atrial fibrillation is obliterated in the pulmonary veins by means of cold application. The tip of the ablation catheter is cooled down to temperatures below 0°C. As can be seen on the right side of the graph to the left, the tissue is cooled down to a certain temperature. As a result, a scar is formed in which less electrical conductivity is possible. Cryoablation of atrial fibrillation does not use an individual electrode, as seen on the left, but rather, a cryo-balloon. The entire balloon is cooled down to below freezing so as to ablate the entire ostium (opening) of the pulmonary veins (see below).
