Die Bestimmung des Kalk-Gehaltes der Herzkranzgefäße ist eine prognostisch wichtige Untersuchung.

Narrowing of the coronary arteries (stenosis) develops over a period of many years. People with risk factors such as hypertension, dyslipidemia or diabetes are often affected by vascular changes which result first in fat deposits and later in  calcium deposits which constrict the blood vessel so that blood circulation is negatively affected. The aim of preventive screening is to recognize the early stages of this process (atherosclerosis) because targeted intervention can slow, stop or even reverse the progression of atherosclerosis.In addition to vascular ultrasound, the computer tomography is of vital importance in cardiac imaging. An important aspect is calcium measurement in the coronary arteries. Modern CT scanners can detect very small amounts of calcification, even without the use of any contrast agents. It is possible to determine the amount of calcium deposited in each of the three coronary arteries. Based on age, sex and other risk factors, an individual risk profile can be created to prognosticate possible development of vascular bottlenecks in later life, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke. With changes in lifestyle, consistent treatment of high blood pressure or diabetes, as well as medication, this risk can be modified.Calcium score measurement can be an important factor in patients suitable for this examination. The radiation exposure with this procedure is low, however, whether this measurement is useful and actually necessary, or whether other types of examinations might lead to a comparable or better result is a topic we can discuss with you, your specialist or general practitioner in context of our preventive programs.
