Diagnostic procedures for cardiac arrhythmias

Cardiac arrhythmias can be the result, or a symptom of another type of heart disease. Therefore, in addition to the ECG other types of examinations must be included for a comprehensive diagnosis.

Many people often describe an occasional feeling of a “skipping" heartbeat ". This may be perfectly harmless. Both an ECG and 24-hour ECG can help to classify specifically the type of arrhythmia.  Using bicycle ergometry arrhythmias can be examined that occur during standardized exercise. By directly measuring flow curves in the heart and specific patterns of stimulation an electro-physiological examination can detect exactly where a rhythm disturbance arises and determine precisely the type of arrhythmia.  This sort of information is important for planning the treatment. In addition to drug treatment there are electro-physiological methods (e.g. ablation) and, last but not least, pacemaker therapy.Whether all of this is necessary can often be determined only after a multi-faceted examination. It is important to rule out treatable causes (see atrial fibrillation) or other diseases of the heart. If in addition to a heart rhythm disorder there is a so-called structural heart disease - that is, a disease of the heart muscle, heart valves or coronary arteries - treatment may possibly be quite different.
Therefore, a comprehensive preliminary diagnosis often includes imaging techniques (echocardiography, MRI and possibly CT) and a cardiac catheter examination.

Rhythm-Center: Expertise in Cardiac Team

With complex diseases, it is important that the field of rhythmology is supported by experienced partners from the disciplines of cardiac-imaging and cardiac catheterization diagnosis. At the Isar Heart Center the focus on arrhythmia is supported by these two specialties, cardiac imaging and cardiac catheterization.
Years of cooperation between the heads of these specialized departments have resulted in our ability to offer refined expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmias. The three department directors (heads) of the Isar Heart Center, after having served for many years at universities, are now recognized as highly specialized professors in the field of rhythmology, cardiac imaging and vascular diagnosis and therapy.
